A finance professional from Keighley is hoping to inspire others to follow their aspirations after triumphing at the Yorkshire Rising Stars Awards in Leeds. Umar Khan, 35 years old, is UK Commercial Finance Manager at ghd – and was named the Overall Yorkshire Rising Star for 2013 at an awards ceremony that recognises the cream of up and coming finance professionals from across the region who have the potential to rise to the very top of their industry. After picking up the winner’s award in the West/North Yorkshire Over £60m Turnover category, Umar then beat six other category winners to pick up the main award of the night. He is now keen to share his success to help others recognise what can be achieved and highlight the range of career opportunities that are available which previously they may not have considered or had felt were out of reach. The Yorkshire Rising Stars Awards were launched in 2010 and are sponsored by financial recruitment specialists Sharp Consultancy, accountancy firm Grant Thornton, law firm DWF and Royal Bank of Scotland. The awards aim to highlight the outstanding achievements of those working in accountancy practices and finance departments of business throughout Yorkshire, and recognise the efforts of key individuals who have gained success in their careers and are making an important contribution to the economy in the region. Umar joined ghd three years ago having previously worked at PwC and United Utilities following graduation from the University of Sheffield. He said: “I was always very academically focussed and my parents encouraged my decision to go to university and study law. My ambition was to be part of a team running a successful and innovative business, and my skills and interest in the financial aspects of this led me towards choosing a career in accountancy.” He added: “After training at a well respected practice, I am now working for one of the region’s most forward-thinking businesses whose brand name is recognised throughout the world. It is very motivating to be part of such a great and ambitious team and to see the fruits of our labour contribute directly to the success of the organisation.” . One of the judges, Chris Sharp, Director at Sharp Consultancy said: “The days of an accountant only taking care of the numbers side of the business are long gone. Today’s finance professionals are dynamic individuals and must possess strong commercial skills, business acumen and be heavily involved in ensuring that finance plays an integral part in the running and development of the business. Umar very clearly displayed these qualities and is highly regarded amongst his colleagues at ghd.” Christian Dickson, Director of Global Forecasting & Planning and HR at ghd nominated Umar for the award. He said: “Umar is undoubtedly a rising star within ghd. As the Commercial Finance Manager of our UK organisation he has been instrumental in growing profits and has been a true ‘right-hand’ in helping the Managing Director, and the company as a whole, navigate through some very tricky retail and economic headwinds. We are all delighted that his achievements have been recognised with this prestigious accolade.” Umar added: “In relation to its proportion of the population, the BME community is still under-represented in the corporate world. Unfortunately, there is also a perception that prospects for success can be limited. I hope that by highlighting my achievements to date, the career opportunities I’ve enjoyed and the recognition that I’ve received, it will inspire others to look at how they can reach further and achieve their own goals.” Outside of work, Umar, who is originally from the North West, enjoys football and is a proud Manchester City fan. He also likes good food – especially curries – and spending time with his family and two young children visiting tourist attractions and taking day trips in the Yorkshire region.
