Fourteen-year-old boxer Zain Ahmed picked-up silver at the tri-natians school championships and is hoping to build on the success.

Zain who is also the North West Amateur Schoolboy champion is presently number two in the UK after taking up boxing at the age of ten.

Zain boxes at Mick Jelly’s Bury ABC gym – the same gym where Amir Khan once trained.


He has travelled to Dublin, Glasgow and London to compete against the best amateur boxers in the country, alongside dad Manny and brother Faz who have joined him at the tournaments.

Manny told us: “It is quite early days but he has been putting in some great performances.
“He likes the training and he is well disciplined.

“He got in to boxing at a young age through his uncles and he just kept impressing at tournaments.

“In the past few years he has picked a lot of wins and keeps improving.

“As a parent we support him and give him every opportunity we can.

“Both myself and his mum and his family are really proud of his achievements.”

Zain, who attends Pleckgate High School, has been described as one of the best prospects in the region.

Zain said: “I enjoy boxing and I like the training. 

“The school have been really supportive too.”

Zain has won the North West Schoolboy title three years in a row.

He said that his favourite boxers were Mike Tyson and Amir Khan.

Manny added: “He trains weekly at the Tyson gym in Accrington and will be back in action when the boxing season starts in September.”
