ASIAN sport stars from across the country will converge on Brierley Hill Civic Hall this Sunday (September 13) in tribute to 'King Shazad'.

The 'King' in question is Kingswinford's Shahzada Saleem who will be celebrating his 50th birthday.

He obtained his nickname after becoming the undisputed champion in the Asian sport of stone lifting.

Fellow stone lifters will be in attendance together with stars from the sports of Kabaddi and Beeni - an Asian form of arm wrestling.

The event is being organised by Shahzada's son Shaz who said: "My father become the youngster ever stone lifting champion back in 1985.

"He helped electrify a sport which was losing its popularity and raised the profile of stone lifting to leave a lasting legacy.

"He now works to highlight the sport and travels around the country encouraging Asian youngsters to get off the streets and become involved with Asian sports."

The event starts at 6pm and is expected to draw a large crowd from the Asian community.
