Oldham Veterans won the Greater Manchester FA veterans Sunday league in their first season.

The team had gone unbeaten winning all their games and only had to avoid defeat to be crowned champs in their penultimate game. Fielding their strongest possible team they faced Chadderton Vets and despite a slow opening to the match Oldham proved to be too strong, eventually winning 6-1.

OVFC was founded by Abdul Basit (Berti), Jewel Miah and Afsor Ali 3 years ago. The team is multi cultural with players from different religious and backgrounds.

Abdul Basit (Player/ manager) said, “We have built something special here that we take pride in, it’s the first time that a team has been built from various other teams come together to represent Oldham and already had huge success both on and off the field and has a lot of potential to develop further”.

Jewel Miah added, “We also deliver coaching sessions at the weekends for young people, offer all abilities indoor Veterans football every Tuesdays, and the club has participated in numerous tournaments. "Our squad also toured Portugal last year where we played two friendly matches. We have a lot of plans in the pipeline to widen our horizon and are looking to do this at a steady pace.”

OVFC has entered a number of national football tournaments to take place after Ramadan.

Afsor Ali said, “We can’t wait to go south and compete in a few tournaments in the next couple of months and hopefully bring some more silverware home.”

OVFC and Rochdale BASA veterans are organising the first national Veterans tournament to be held in the North of England on Sun 9 August 2015 on Chapel Rd’s synthetic football pitch, Oldham.

Eighteen teams have already confirmed entry including teams from Bradford, London, Milton Keynes, Preston, Leeds.
