AMIR Khan believes undefeated five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jnr is running scared of a showdown with him.

The Bolton superstar who impressed with a comprehensive points victory over Devon Alexander in Las Vegas on Saturday has rubbished Mayweather’s post-fight claims that he is not a big enough name for him to face.

Now back in his home town, Khan says Mayweather is making excuses not to fight him next with the pound-for-pound champion already stating a desire for another huge match-up against Manny Pacquiao.

Khan told The Bolton News: “He may just not want to fight me – maybe he’s running scared.

“I don’t think Floyd will fight Manny – I just cannot see it happening.

“If it’s not Mayweather then I will try for Pacquiao.

“He says I am not a big enough name for him but then is (Marcos) Maidana, (Robert) Guerrero, (Victor) Ortiz?

“I am bigger than all those put together.

“Maybe he is trying to put me off the fight.

“I spoke to Al Haymon (promoter) and he said he is going to do the best he can to get me the fight I want because he works with me and Floyd Mayweather.

“It is just a waiting game to be honest.

“Last year I was close to getting Mayweather.

“He ran a poll and I won but then he had an excuse that I had not fought at 147lbs which I hadn’t.”

Khan is confident he can cause Mayweather problems despite his impressive record of 47 wins from 47 fights.

He believes he has earned his chance with his back-to-back victories against Luis Collazo and Alexander since stepping up a division to 147lbs.

And he says Mayweather will regret not taking the fight which looked close a year ago.

Khan added: “I believe he made the biggest mistake not fighting me then because he would have had a better chance of beating me.

“Now he has bigger problems.

“I have proven myself at this weight and I am stronger, wiser and am hitting my peak.

“I am not making the mistakes I used to before.

“I have fought two guys at 147lbs.

“I fought Collazo and put on a good performance and then fought at the MGM again against Devon Alexander and beat him.

“I read stories a year ago that Floyd said Devon would take over his throne when he retires so where does that put me now?

“I am answering all the questions and beating who is being put in front of me.

“I could have taken an easier fight but I didn’t because I wanted to send a statement out and I think I did that.

“I did not just beat Alexander; I showed the world how good Amir Khan is.”

It may be a fight Khan yearns for but he knows that it will ultimately only happen on Mayweather’s terms, if at all.

The Bolton star added: “I cannot do anything because with Floyd he does what he wants.

“He’s his boss – nobody can tell him what to do.

“I am just staying focused.

“I respect him – he is the best in the world and that’s why I want to fight him.

“I will always be left thinking what would have happened if it doesn’t happen.”
