A black cab has been developed which will allow passengers to connect their smartphone to an 18-inch colour screen.
The system will enable passengers to connect to WiFi and make it easier to stream videos, edit documents and send emails.
British technology firm Frazer-Nash Research has described its new Metrocab as "London's most technologically advanced black cab".
The screen can also be used to display location-specific advertising which changes during the journey, opening up a potential new revenue stream for drivers.
Noamaan Siddiqi, general manager of Frazer-Nash, said the new Metrocab would help passengers "put those lost hours stuck in traffic to good use".
He added: "This pioneering technology is a game-changer for passenger experience. We are redefining the way people travel.
"With the connectivity we are offering in the cab, passengers will be able to have a more productive journey."
Congestion figures published by transport information supplier Inrix last month showed that journey times in central London have grown by 12% each year from 2012 to 2015.
