FRIENDS of a teenager who was killed in a horror road smash in Bradford early today have taken to social media to express their sorrow at his death.

The 17-year-old, named locally as Adnan Shafiq, was a passenger in a grey Seat Leon which crashed into a traffic sign on Shipley Airedale Road at about 12.15am.

EDITOR'S COMMENT: WE MUST LIMIT THE SPEED OF YOUNG DRIVERS

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver, an 18-year-old man, suffered serious, but not life-threatening, injuries in the crash. He has also been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, or anyone who saw the car before the incident, to come forward.

Anyone with information can contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 101, quoting log number 0014 of September 27.

One friend said: "Can't believe what I heard this morning, rest in peace."

Another posted: "R.I.P 'Adnaan Bfd' can't believe what's happened I was really shocked when I heard the sad news."

Another added: "My brother gone but not forgotten RIP Adnaan, am shocked."

A friend said: "Can't believe he's gone."

Another commented: "Such shocking news, what a good and respectful lad."

Police, ambulance services, and fire crews from Bradford, Odsal, and Cleckheaton attended the incident, which closed the road for a number of hours.

A spokesman for the Bradford crew said the car had flown about four feet in the air before becoming wrapped around the sign.

Crews were at the scene for more than two hours freeing the driver from the vehicle.

The car, which flipped on to its side and suffered significant damage, is thought to have been the only vehicle involved in the crash.

People have been quick to take to social media to express their shock and sympathy.

One person said: "Just seen this pic of the young boy who passed away. Heartbreaking only 17 yrs old... my heart aches for his parents..."

One Facebook comment read: "Thoughts are with the family and friends of this young man."

One man said: "That's horrific. Thoughts and prayers out to all concerned."

Another said: "Such a waste of a young life."
