A two-year-old boy has died after being hit by a car in what police have called "a tragic incident".

West Midlands Police said Muhhamad Zakariyya was hit by a Nissan Almera on a residential street in the Aston area of Birmingham at about 6.50pm on Tuesday.

Medics arriving on the scene in Nelson Road battled to save the toddler's life, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.

The driver of a blue Nissan is helping police crash investigators.

The force, which released a photograph of the little boy, has now launched an appeal for witnesses.

Sergeant Steve Newbury, from the force's collision investigation unit, said: "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the boy's family."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance service said: "Advanced life support was carried out by medics at the scene, and resuscitation attempts continued en route to hospital, who had been pre-alerted and were awaiting the child's arrival.

"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of medics at the scene and hospital, nothing could be done to save the child and he was sadly confirmed dead a short time after arriving at hospital."

Anyone who witnessed what happened is urged to call police on 101.
