World War Two veteran Darbara Singh Bhullar, who served in Burma and Singapore, was presented with a special veteran’s medal by the British Army.

He received the award at a special event welcoming the Indian Commonwealth Games Team to Glasgow last night.

Organised by the Association of Indian Organisations (AIO), the presentation was made before 350 guests, including some 200 Indian athletes and officials, at a special dinner at River Palace, Glasgow.

In addition to senior AIO representatives and army personnel, guests included Scottish government representatives, as well as senior dignitaries from the High Commission of India in London and the Consulate General of India, Edinburgh as well as local politicians.

Gurmail Singh Dhami, chairman of AIO, said ‘On behalf of all the member organisations, I would like to congratulate Darbara Singh Bhullar on his presentation and extend a warm welcome to all the athletes and officials representing India at the 20th Commonwealth Games.”

The AIO, which has raised over £100,000 for charity, also made presentations at the event to Amrit Paul Kaushal and Dilawar Singh Benning, both of whom received MBEs this year in recognition of their services to the community.

The Association of Indian Organisations (AIO) is an umbrella organisation for all Indian organisations in Scotland.

Its aims are to assist members of the Indian community in tackling the issues that concern them, including passports and visa services, policing, health related matters and education.
